At Directory One, one of our main goals of 2016 is to emphasize the importance of responsive web design.

If you are a business owner, you may be asking “What is responsive web design and why do I need it?”

Responsive web design enables a website’s layout, including images and text, to automatically adjust to different screen sizes using the same URL. This is done through the use of fluid grids, flexible images, and media queries. By making a website responsive, your site will remain user friendly across a variety of different devices with varying screen sizes.

The Pew Research Center reports that 68% of adults in the U.S have smartphones. For people between the ages of 18-29, the number jumps to 86%! An article from Smart Insights also noted an important statistic, in a study made by Global Web Index, it was found that 80% of internet users own a smartphone.

The need to make your website easy to use on mobile devices is crucial for your business to gain visibility in mobile platforms. Search Engine Land reports that Google officially announced that mobile searches surpassed desktop searches on Google. A Google Ads blog further notes that 61% of visitors would exit the website and look for another one if they didn’t find what they were looking for right away.

Additionally, an article in Forbes noted that Google listed responsive web design as an industry best practice. Google Developers recommend responsive design because it gives Google Algorithms more accuracy in assigning indexed pages. In order to index pages on Google, Googlebots crawl through your site to discover new updates and pages to your site. By using responsive design, Googlebots can crawl through your site once–rapidly!– increasing efficiency by helping Google keep up with new webpage updates and indexing more of your website’s content. Faster indexing means your site rankings will improve more quickly, thus bringing in more customers!
