I agree with you James, a smaller business who have limited budget for SEO, attention to the specific pages will work but my point was when you start a site from scratch it is always good to build a site keeping SEO in mind.

I agree with what you are saying for the most part, but want to suggest that SEO and good website design don't have to all happen at the same time - for instance, when we develop websites for client we sit down and do basic SEO and ensure that the site has a good SEO structure, but for the most part do "logical" as aposed to "optimized" titles and body text. The reason for this is simple - time and money - but the reality is a bit more complex. By doing it this way, we can produce an excellent site for our clients that ranks "well" organically and then base our next role - that of an SEO company on a foundation where we know how things are being picked up and what pages specifically need attention. With small business owners who simply don't have 10's of thousands of dollars to spend, this allows us to do incrimental SEO, one page at a time, rather than a huge project to overhaul an entire site.

Anyhow, just my two cents :)

Thomson - very informative, as usual. You make some excellent observations of ways that SEO companies often "cut corners". The technical aspects of SEO are more difficult for laymen to grasp; which is why I think clients are more apt to just trust the company they hired. Not always a good idea...
