Your SEO strategy to drive more traffic to your website for Houston business growth should be a priority in 2013. Like time, your business is not stationary. When was the last time you evaluated your website’s performance?

Your website needs a tune-up from time to time, just like your car. Your transportation should get you from point A to point B reliably. You should get power when you need it.

In terms of your site, that means attracting traffic and increasing your leads.

The beginning of the year is a good time to assess your current SEO strategy. If you’re slipping in ranking or aren’t ranking as anticipated, it’s time for a major website over-haul. If you are ranking highly, you might not want to change. Still, there’s always room to fine-tune your website’s engine.

Assessing your website’s SEO strategy performance is a relatively uncomplicated task. There are 5 simple steps to the process.

  1. Review your analytics from the last 6 months. Pay special attention to browsers, search engines, and keywords. Browsers will tell you if most of your traffic comes from PCs and laptops or mobile devices. Search engines are important, because the traffic from Google might be searching using different keywords from your Bing traffic.
  2. Reevaluate your site with a keyword analysis. Are your current keywords working to drive traffic to your site? Are there any new keywords you can add? Then do some keyword research with Google’s keyword tool. Type in any new keywords and everything that you can think of as synonyms or related to the new search. Make a short list of the top relevant related keywords. Pay special attention to long-tailed keywords, and make sure you write them down. It’s best to keep your list of keywords you want to add to 10 or so.
  3. Perform a content analysis. Really look at your content. Are there current keywords that you are using that are not generating traffic? You might consider re-writing those pages using more appropriate keywords. Are you adding keywords? If so, you should develop relevant content using the new keywords. Utilize the keywords by creating pages that just use one or two of your new keywords on each page. You can do this by either adding articles or blogs, but blogging is usually the easiest route to take.
  4. Check your backlinks and outbound links. Is your backlinking strategy working? Are your outbound links referencing authoritative, reliable sites? A lot of your search ranking is dependent on the quality and quantity to your site from other webpages. Your SEO strategy should include linking. You can help your backlink strategy by posting your link on social media, being listed on online directories, guest blogging, posting thoughtful questions and answers on other website’s comment sections and forums. Likewise, check your outbound links to make sure they reference authoritative, noncompeting sites.
  5. Pay attention to your monthly analytics results. You need to see if your new strategies are working. You will also want to keep up with your keyword and social media trends to make future projections. Future projections indicate when you might need to perform another website tune-up.

You made all sorts of New Year’s resolutions – maybe to get in shape, drink less coffee, run in the 2014 Houston Marathon, or even travel the world.
